Hacking can cause a person’s reputation to be damaged and cost them thousands of dollars in lost advertising revenue. Dale Berry is the owner of an English preschool in Japan. He was the victim of a hacking attack on his Facebook account hacked. Hackers ran fraudulent ads using his account, draining his business of funds and caused him to lose his reputation.
The hackers first targeted people with weak passwords like “qwerty” and “password.” Once they have access to an account, they scan the top five most popular friends and then impersonate one of them and ask for the password reset code. They then make use of a security feature that allows people to add friends as trusted contacts in case they lose their password, and then ask these trusted contacts to provide the one-time password to regain access to the account.
Another method hackers can gain access to accounts is to buy stolen login information. A cache of 26 million Amazon, LinkedIn and Facebook passwords was recently found available for sale on the dark web. A lot of them were leaking through custom Trojan malware that hacked into millions of Windows-based computers between 2018 to 2020.
Users can stay safe from attacks by constantly checking that the address bar on their browser is Facebook and not some other website. The password should be created by comprised of letters, numbers and spaces. Never use it on other email or social media account. Additionally they should monitor their activity notifications on a regular basis. Twitter for instance, will notify users when there’s a suspicious login from any new device or place.
